Mariah lambasted Summer for the information she withheld from Kyle Abbott (Michael Mealor) about Phyllis Summers (Michelle Stafford). The crux of Mariah’s argument is that Summer’s defense of her mother did not justify lying to Kyle about Phyllis being dead.
Sharon Rosales (Sharon Case) owns Crimson Lights, which is one of this soap opera’s longtime settings. As devoted fans recall, Mariah was directed by Victor Newman (Eric Braeden) to gaslight Sharon, pretending to be her deceased daughter’s spirit.
Cassie Newman (Grimes) was an identical twin. But Sharon never knew she gave birth to twins because Helen Copeland (Katrina Logue) stole her baby when she was born. Ian Ward (Ray Wise) engineered the above crime, with Mariah being raised in his cult.
Years passed and Mariah did not learn that Sharon was her mother until later in life. Victor spotted Mariah when she was in Genoa City, Wisconsin, pursuing an old boyfriend, Tyler Michaelson (Redaric Williams).
Eventually, Mariah’s identity was revealed, and she and Sharon made peace. Part of settling into GC included being in contact with Summer (then played by Hunter King). They clashed from the beginning, with Mariah’s horrific childhood incomparable to Summer’s.
The basis and endurance of Mariah’s jealousy of Summer were projected through her incessant use of the condescending tag, Snowflake. Summer had multiple family members who cared about her, whereas Mariah’s early life was marked by survival.
Mariah has been friends with Kyle for years. They have often supported each other. Viewers likely suspect the writing staff created that connection to inject conflict between Mariah and Summer.
Kyle is reeling after learning Summer protected Phyllis. Doing so caused his mother, Diane Jenkins (Susan Walters), to remain in prison and then to be in home confinement.
It is natural for Kyle to seek advice at this low point in his remarriage to Summer. But Mariah is not a neutral party, having always believed she is not the right fit for her friend.
If Sharon were not caught in Cameron Kirsten’s (Linden Ashby) return revenge scheme, which includes kidnapping Faith Newman (Reylynn Caster), Mariah’s sister, then she could offer her surviving identical twin maternal advice.
Mariah’s chiding of Summer did not include her indefensible gaslighting of Sharon in 2014 when Grimes returned to the cast. Forgiveness allowed Mariah to gain a relationship with her mother.
Mariah rejected Summer’s request to help her facilitate the same with Kyle. Any citing of the scenarios being different would reflect open attempts to miss this apt point on Y&R.
