Despite the fact that Michael still feels the aftershocks of his wife’s brutal battle with leukemia, his mother is urging him to put his personal feelings aside and think of Sonny. Michael may be complying, and Dex sounds like he’s on board to see this through, too, but are they both doing it for the right reasons? Is Dex invested in this job to truly have Sonny’s back, or is there more to the story?
The thing is, Dex’s heart really isn’t in this. As he said himself, he’s doing this for Josslyn ‘Joss’ Jacks (Eden McCoy). While one could argue that that should mean his heart is in it, his primary goal isn’t protecting the family, or Sonny.
Point blank, Dex is never going to care as much about the Corinthos clan as Michael does, nor will he step up to the plate in the same way that Michael would. In time, Michael may come to see this, and it could encourage him to push Dex out of the way. Fans have suspected that Dex would be the new Jason Morgan (Steve Burton) ever since he came to town, but is Jason’s best replacement actually another Quartermaine by blood — Michael?
Despite Michael’s past actions, it seems that he is surprisingly eager to lend a helping hand to his dear old dad. However, we still aren’t sure whether his intentions are stemming from a desire to protect his father at all costs, or if he just wants to ease his own guilt for going after the guy and seeking to put him away.
Rumors are circulating that suggest it may be the latter, compounded by an inclination to reconcile with his pops. As Carly emphasized, Sonny is treading water in new territory with the Pikeman Group, and he can’t afford to screw it up. When Dex does his job — and thinks he’s doing it well — will Michael see areas for improvement and feel as though Dex is missing the mark in keeping his father safe?
Michael’s longing to be more than just his father’s son is going to become more apparent in the months ahead. Perhaps he longs for the kind of bond that Sonny shared with Jason, an unbreakable one that transcends life and death.
Carly seems to think that Michael is well-versed in the business, enough to guide Dex on how to operate, but Michael has only been a bystander growing up around all of it. In fact, if anyone knows the business well, it’s Carly.
Why doesn’t she advise Dex on how to manage Sonny? Is she hoping to groom her own son for the business in the process of deceiving her ex? What do you think? Will Michael jump ship from ELQ and end up fully embroiled in the mob and ready to take over for his dad someday?
